Harnessing Smart Charging for Fleet Efficiency at NYPA MTA Bridges & Tunnels

At S Curve Strategies, we are proud to spearhead the managed charging initiative for NYPA MTA Bridges & Tunnels, showcasing our commitment to innovative and sustainable fleet management solutions. This initiative is a testament to how strategic planning and advanced technology can dramatically enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability in fleet operations.

Objective of the Initiative

Our project aims to revolutionize the way fleet operations are managed by reducing peak electricity demand, optimizing time-of-use (TOU) tariff charging, and integrating renewable energy sources. With a clear goal to transition 100% of light-duty non-emergency and medium to heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) to zero-emission by 2035 and 2040 respectively, we are setting a robust framework for a sustainable future.

Strategic Charging Management

Utilizing advanced fleet charging software, we manage the charging of 533 fleet vehicles across nine facilities efficiently. This system not only optimizes charging schedules based on electricity rates and grid demands but also integrates with existing fleet management systems to centralize data and streamline operations. The software provides predictive analytics to accurately forecast charging demands and generates detailed reports on energy consumption and operational performance.

Innovative Charging Solutions

  1. TOU Rates: By leveraging ConEd’s off-peak TOU rates, we significantly reduce charging costs without the need for additional expenditures. This approach aligns charging operations during the lowest cost periods, specifically from 10 PM to 8 AM on weekdays and all day on weekends.

  2. Direct Load Control via Charger: This moderately easy solution employs external software that adjusts the charging times and speeds to ensure charging occurs during the least expensive times of the day. It addresses various challenges such as maximum loading, utility capacity issues, and demand charge reductions.

  3. Direct Load Control via Automaker or Third-Party Telematics: The most complex of our strategies involves collecting data from charging stations and third-party sources to create an economical and efficient charging methodology. This system dispatches charging at the most cost-effective times, balancing the needs of the vehicles with the capacities of the electrical grid.

Real-World Impact and Benefits

The implementation of these managed charging strategies at NYPA MTA not only promotes cost efficiency but also enhances grid resiliency. It represents a significant step towards achieving large-scale electrification of fleet operations with minimal environmental impact. The project demonstrates how managed charging can alleviate grid stress, reduce operational costs, and support the transition to sustainable transportation solutions.

At S Curve Strategies, we are excited to continue leading the charge in fleet electrification, helping organizations like NYPA MTA Bridges & Tunnels achieve their environmental and operational goals.
